A windshield claim in Arizona runs through your comprehensive coverage, not collision, and in most cases the shop files it for you. You call a glass shop, give them your policy number and vehicle details, they verify your coverage with the carrier, and you pay whatever your policy says you owe. That is the whole process — the complexity is in the details, and most of those details are ours to handle, not yours.

Here is the full walkthrough, so you know what is happening at each step and what nobody is telling you.

Comprehensive vs. collision: which one actually pays

This trips up more drivers than anything else, so start here.

Coverage What it handles Typical windshield scenario
Comprehensive Damage that isn't a crash — road debris, hail, storms, theft, vandalism, animal strikes A rock off a dump truck on the 101; a monsoon that drives gravel into the glass
Collision Damage from hitting another vehicle or object The windshield breaks as part of a wreck, and the glass is one line item on a much bigger repair

Almost every windshield claim we see in Phoenix falls under comprehensive. That matters because comprehensive and collision usually carry separate deductibles, and they are frequently not the same number. Drivers sometimes assume their glass claim is dead because their collision deductible is high, when the comprehensive deductible that actually applies is lower.

The important caveat: coverage and deductibles vary by policy, and plenty of Arizona drivers carry liability-only insurance with no comprehensive at all. If comprehensive isn't on your policy, glass damage is out of pocket. Pull up your declarations page or your insurer's app before you assume either way.

What Arizona law does and doesn't do here

Because people search for it: Arizona is not one of the states that forces insurers to waive the deductible on windshield claims. There is no state rule that hands you a free windshield. What governs your claim is the policy you bought — the coverage you selected and the deductible you agreed to.

Some carriers do offer optional full-glass or zero-deductible glass endorsements you can add for a small premium, and some waive the deductible specifically for repairs. Those are policy features, not state mandates. Insurance regulations and carrier practices change over time, so confirm the current details with your own carrier rather than trusting anything you read online — including this page.

Why insurers would rather you repair than replace

Here is the piece of leverage most drivers never learn: a chip repair costs an insurer a small fraction of a full replacement. On a modern vehicle with a camera behind the mirror, a replacement also means recalibration, which adds more cost still.

So insurers have a real financial motive to keep small damage small. That is why many policies cover chip and crack repair with a reduced deductible or no deductible at all — the carrier would rather spend a little now than a lot in three weeks when Arizona heat has run that chip across your field of view.

This is not a loophole. It is the one place where what's cheapest for the insurer, cheapest for you, and best for the glass all point the same direction. Ask the question when you call: is repair covered without a deductible on my policy? The answer is often yes, and it takes about 15 minutes in your driveway.

If the damage is already too large or sits directly in the driver's sight line, repair is off the table and you're looking at full windshield replacement instead. We'll tell you honestly which one you're dealing with — see what drives replacement cost if you want to understand the numbers behind that side.

The claim, start to finish

1. Document the damage before you do anything else

Take two photos with your phone: one wide shot showing the vehicle and where the damage sits on the glass, one close-up. Note roughly when and where it happened — "I-17 northbound, gravel truck, Tuesday morning" is plenty. You are not building a legal case, you are just giving the carrier a coherent story.

2. Check your coverage

Open your declarations page and find two things: whether you carry comprehensive, and what the comprehensive deductible is. If your carrier's app shows a separate glass deductible or a full-glass endorsement, note that too.

3. Call the shop, not the 800 number

You can call your insurer first, and many people do. But calling a glass shop first usually saves a step, because the shop is going to end up on the phone with the carrier regardless. We take your information, confirm what your policy actually covers, and get a real answer before you commit to anything.

4. We file the claim

This is the part drivers dread and it is the part you can hand off entirely. Glass Detail works with all major insurers and files the claim for you: we open it, submit the vehicle and damage details, get the authorization, and bill the carrier directly. You are not sitting in a phone queue reading your VIN to someone.

Several of the customers who left us reviews mention exactly this part — the insurance side being handled without them having to chase it.

5. Approval and scheduling

Once the claim is authorized, we order the correct glass for your specific vehicle and schedule the work. We aim for next-business-day service, and mobile service covers Phoenix and Central Arizona — Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, and Peoria — so most jobs happen at your home or workplace.

6. The work itself

A chip repair takes about 15 minutes. A replacement runs about an hour, plus the adhesive's safe drive-away time before the vehicle can be driven — that cure window depends on the adhesive and the conditions, which in an Arizona summer are not the same as a mild morning, so we give you the specific number on the day.

If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera behind the mirror, ADAS recalibration is not optional. We perform it in-house with Autel equipment, typically about 30 minutes after the install, so you leave with the safety systems verified rather than a referral to a dealership.

7. Settlement

You pay whatever your policy leaves you responsible for — commonly your deductible, sometimes nothing, occasionally the whole thing if you're out of pocket by choice. We bill the insurer for the rest. Every install carries a lifetime nationwide workmanship warranty, which matters if you move or travel: the warranty follows the work, not the ZIP code.

What to have ready when you call

Gather these four things and the call takes a couple of minutes:

  • Insurance company and policy number — from your card or the carrier's app
  • Year, make, model, and trim of the vehicle
  • What the glass has — rain sensor, heated wiper park, heads-up display, lane-keeping or automatic braking (that last one means a camera, which means calibration)
  • Where and roughly when the damage happened

Your VIN helps but isn't required up front. If you already have a written quote from another shop, bring it — we price match valid written quotes, so shopping around doesn't cost you the certified installation.

Two things worth knowing before you file

Don't wait to see if it spreads. Arizona does not give chips time to sit still. Between 110-degree afternoons, the thermal shock of full-blast A/C against hot glass, and freeway gravel, a repairable chip becomes an unrepairable crack faster here than almost anywhere. A claim for a repair is small and simple. A claim for a replacement on a camera-equipped vehicle is neither.

Get the number before you file. If the estimate lands under your comprehensive deductible, filing accomplishes nothing except putting a claim on your record. We'll quote you first and tell you plainly when paying out of pocket is the better move. That happens more often than you'd expect on small repairs — and if you're getting a replacement anyway, your first chip repair is free with it.

Start the claim without the phone tree

Send us your year, make, model, and insurance carrier and we'll verify your coverage, tell you whether repair or replacement applies, and give you a free estimate within two hours during business hours. If it's a covered claim, we file it and bill the carrier — you approve the appointment and we come to you.

Frequently asked questions

Glass damage from road debris is normally handled under comprehensive coverage, which carriers treat differently from an at-fault collision. That said, how any claim affects your premium is specific to your insurer, your policy, and your claim history. Before you file, ask your agent directly how a comprehensive glass claim is rated on your policy.

Insurers often steer you toward a shop in their network, and that network exists for their convenience as much as yours. The vehicle is yours, so tell the carrier which shop you want to use and ask how they handle billing for that shop. Glass Detail works with all major insurers and can have that conversation on your behalf.

Then filing a claim gains you nothing and you should simply pay out of pocket. This happens most often with small chip repairs, which are inexpensive to begin with. Get a written quote first, compare it against your comprehensive deductible, and decide from there. We will give you the number before anything is filed.
