A forward-facing ADAS camera mounted at the top of a car windshield behind the rear-view mirror

Fifteen years ago, replacing a windshield was purely about the glass. Today, for a lot of vehicles, the glass is only half the job. The other half is a small camera behind your rear-view mirror — and if it isn't recalibrated after the replacement, some of your car's most important safety features may not work the way they should.

Here's what ADAS calibration is, when you need it, and why it's not a step to skip.

What is ADAS, and what does the windshield have to do with it?

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems — the features that help you avoid collisions and stay in your lane. Common ones include:

  • Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward-collision warning
  • Traffic-sign recognition

Many of these rely on a forward-facing camera mounted at the top of the windshield, looking out through the glass. It watches lane markings, vehicles, and signs, and feeds that information to the car's computer.

Because that camera looks through your windshield, its aim depends on the exact position and optical properties of the glass. Replace the windshield and the camera's alignment is no longer guaranteed — even a tiny difference in angle translates to a meaningful error far down the road.

Do you need calibration after a windshield replacement?

If your vehicle has any of the features above, the answer is almost always yes. As a rule of thumb:

  • Most vehicles from roughly the last 5–7 years with driver-assistance features need calibration after a windshield replacement.
  • Older vehicles without a windshield-mounted camera generally don't.

The safest way to know for certain is to tell us your year, make, and model — we'll confirm whether calibration is required before we start.

Why skipping it is a real risk

It's tempting to think of calibration as an optional extra. It isn't. A forward camera that's even slightly off can:

  • Misjudge where your lane is, so lane-keeping nudges you at the wrong moment
  • Misread the distance to the car ahead, so automatic braking triggers late — or unnecessarily
  • Reduce the effectiveness of collision warnings exactly when you need them most

These systems are designed to react in fractions of a second. They can only do that if the camera sees the road accurately. Calibration is what makes sure it does.

Static vs. dynamic calibration

There are two ways to calibrate, and some vehicles require one, the other, or both:

  • Static calibration happens in the shop. The vehicle is positioned precisely in front of manufacturer-specified targets, and the camera is aligned to them using calibration equipment.
  • Dynamic calibration happens on the road. A technician drives the vehicle at set speeds under specific conditions while the system calibrates itself.

Which one your car needs depends on the manufacturer. The important thing is having the right equipment and know-how for your specific vehicle — which is exactly what our ADAS-certified technicians are set up for, using Autel calibration equipment.

What to expect at Glass Detail

Here's how it fits into a normal windshield replacement visit:

  1. We remove the old windshield and install the new one with Sika-certified adhesive.
  2. We allow the proper safe-drive-away time for the adhesive to set.
  3. We recalibrate the forward camera — typically about 30 minutes — using the correct static or dynamic procedure for your vehicle.
  4. We confirm the systems are reading correctly before you leave.

Because we handle calibration in-house, you don't have to make a second appointment at a dealership or drive around with your safety systems offline. It's one visit, done right, backed by our lifetime nationwide workmanship warranty.

Does calibration cost extra?

Calibration is skilled work that uses specialized equipment, so it does add to the total cost of a replacement — we cover how that fits into the overall price in our Phoenix windshield replacement cost guide. In many cases, if insurance is covering your replacement, it covers the required calibration too. As a preferred vendor for all insurance companies, we sort that out with your insurer for you.

The bottom line

If your car helps you stay in your lane or brakes on its own, its windshield camera is part of a safety system — and that system is only as good as its calibration. After a windshield replacement, calibration isn't a nice-to-have; it's what makes those features trustworthy again.

Frequently asked questions

If your vehicle has features like lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control, it almost certainly has a windshield-mounted camera that needs recalibration after a windshield replacement. When in doubt, ask us with your year, make, and model.

A calibration can typically be completed in about 30 minutes after the new windshield is installed and the adhesive has set. It's done in the same visit.

An uncalibrated forward camera may misjudge lane position or the distance to the car ahead, which means lane-keeping and automatic braking can react late, early, or incorrectly. Calibration restores those systems to the manufacturer's specification, which is why we treat it as a required step, not an upsell.
